Celebrating Mardi Gras: WOMS Eighth Grade Lions’ Team Interdisciplinary Project

DSC00503The streets of New Orleans were filled with celebrations, music, and parties this March as the Mardi Gras (translated as “Fat Tuesday”)  season rolled in and rolled out.  Just as in New Orleans, the eighth grade Lions’ Team hallway was filled with decorations, music, and a grand Mardi Gras celebration as the culmination of a three week interdisciplinary project designed by their team teachers.  Each student was responsible for a Mardi Gras themed project in their core subjects.  In Ms. Danielle Bell’s ELA class students discussed the traditions of Mardi Gras including Lent.  Lions’ Team students emerged themselves in the full scope of the writing process centered around the idea of a Lent sacrifice (if you had to give something up for 40 days what would it be).  Students began with journaling and brainstorming ideas and then composed their rough drafts.  Moving on in the writing process, students engaged in effective peer reviewing and editing.  Their ELA final product was a well composed 5 paragraph essay on their Lent sacrifice.  In social studies, Ms. Gladys Tate placed students in cooperative learning groups, or “Krewes” (organizations and groups that band together to organize an event in Mardi Gras) where they learned about the Louisiana Purchase, the French influence on American culture, and the history of Mardi Gras. From ‘Creole Culture and Cuisine,’ ‘Mardi Gras Unmasked: The Masks and Masquerade Balls,’ ‘The Symbols of Mardi Gras’, ‘Zydeco and Jazz’, ‘Krewes and Parades’, students created posters, Prezis, and PowerPoint Presentations to reflect their research and knowledge.
